Sadly, Toulouse-Lautrec was an artist who struggled throughout his short life from genetic diseases which stunted his growth. These problems were the main contributor to him becoming an alcoholic after struggling to cope with the negative public reaction that he received throughout his life. These social difficulties are common amongst great artists, but Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was unusual in the extreme impact that these had on his life.
Despite the difficulties that the artist endured throughout his life, and the relative shortness of it, Toulouse-Lautrec still left a huge mark on the French art world and managed to gain respect for it in his own lifetime, which offered him some comfort during the hard times of his social exclusion.
